Julie Ebbing (b. 1985) works in various materials; wood and linocut are recurring elements in her larger installations. Her visual universe is multifaceted, comprising references to art historical motifs, portraits of people, self-portraits as well as elements from everyday life. Her work encompasses both the raw and the vulnerable, both simple lines and complex compositions. It is often humorous, and, above all, it is insistent and uncompromising. Ebbing has a lot to convey, and her works are packed with meaning.
The theme of this exhibition revolves around surveys and statements related to power structures, social constructions, identity, and hierarchies. By shedding light on discrimination against women in both art history and in our time, Ebbing’s artistic practice highlights gender roles as well as issues pertaining to democracy and politics at large. Hannah Ryggen Army is a concept Ebbing has been developing for several years. The army includes several other artists who will also form part of the exhibition.
Julie Ebbing completed her master’s degree in arts and crafts, graphics, and drawing at the Oslo Academy of Arts in 2016. She has received several scholarships and her work has been purchased by various private and public institutions.
