In five prints from Neue Ornamente (Berlin, 1899) by the artist Arnold Lyongrün, we see insects and plants used as ornaments. Lyongrün is a representative of Art Nouveau, ‘the new art’, which reached its apex around 1900. His motifs are typical for this style: nature’s organic lines, both in flora and fauna, inspired the designs. Lyongrün, for example, transformed the symmetry of a dragonfly into a pattern-building element. Sometimes insects are almost hidden by his play of lines. Can you find the ladybugs, moths and other insects? Motifs such as these can help us appreciate the beauty of winged beings that, in addition to being beautiful, play a crucial role in nature’s ecosystems.
